CFO Advisor

Proposed engagement details subject to confirmation

Full-Time | Independent Contractor | 40 hours per week. The proposed schedule is Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM Mountain Time (MT). These engagement terms and the exact schedule remain subject to confirmation.

About the role

We are seeking an experienced CFO Advisor to own an assigned portfolio of client accounts and provide fractional CFO leadership to business owners and executive teams. As each client’s primary CFO contact, you will interpret financial results, lead planning discussions and turn recommendations into practical actions with clear owners and follow-through.

This role requires independent financial judgment, strong commercial insight and confident client communication. You will help clients understand performance, manage cash, evaluate growth opportunities and make informed decisions within the agreed service scope.

Role scope and collaboration

The CFO Advisor owns delivery of client advisory services. The Managing Partner runs and scales the firm and manages the accounting team. Bookkeeping, reconciliations and routine close production remain with the accounting team; the Advisor reviews and interprets financials, identifies issues and coordinates corrections before relying on the results.

Manage client advice and routine delivery independently. Escalate material risks, unresolved reporting issues, and changes to scope or capacity to the appropriate firm leader while retaining ownership of client communication and follow-through.

Key responsibilities

Client portfolio ownership

  • Lead the ongoing CFO relationship for assigned clients. Set expectations, prepare for meetings and maintain a delivery calendar aligned with each client’s service level.
  • Lead monthly management reviews and quarterly planning discussions. Explain the financial implications of business decisions and challenge assumptions constructively.
  • Own a client action log with priorities, owners, due dates and status. Follow up on agreed actions, track results and surface delays or decisions that need the client’s attention.

Financial planning and performance review

  • Review monthly management accounts and explain revenue, margin, expense and cash-flow trends. Analyze actual results against budgets and forecasts, identify the causes of material variances and recommend practical responses.
  • Develop and maintain budgets, rolling forecasts and financial models appropriate to each engagement. Document assumptions, explain changes and use scenarios to assess risk and opportunity.
  • Define useful client KPIs and present concise management reporting that connects financial performance to operating decisions.

Cash flow and commercial strategy

  • Maintain practical cash plans using expected receipts, payments and working-capital needs. Identify liquidity risks early and advise on collections, payment timing and funding requirements.
  • Evaluate pricing, margins, cost structures, revenue streams, capital allocation and expansion opportunities. Assess trade-offs and recommend actions that support financially sustainable growth.
  • Provide financial input on financing options, acquisitions and exit planning. Fundraising execution, M&A, transaction due diligence and other substantial special projects require separately agreed scope, capacity and deliverables.

Reporting quality and financial governance

  • Review the reliability and consistency of financial information using US GAAP and relevant reporting requirements. Coordinate with accounting on discrepancies, needed corrections and delivery dependencies; verify resolution before presenting affected analysis.
  • Identify financial and commercial risks and recommend improvements to controls, reporting and accountability. Bring material concerns to the client and appropriate firm leader promptly.

Portfolio delivery and technology

  • Plan workload by client complexity, service level, meeting cadence and deliverable hours. Track time against scope and raise capacity constraints early so service quality remains consistent.
  • Use advanced Excel and QuickBooks Online reporting to analyze results and build clear financial models. Learn and adopt Kick as part of the firm’s accounting and reporting workflow.
  • Use approved AI tools to support analysis and drafting while protecting client confidentiality. Check outputs against source records and apply human review before using them in advice or client deliverables.

Required qualifications and experience

  • 10+ years of progressive finance, accounting or financial leadership experience, including work as a CFO, Finance Director, Fractional CFO or senior financial advisor.
  • Strong finance fundamentals and commercial judgment, with demonstrated experience advising business owners and executive teams and managing competing client priorities independently.
  • Strong understanding of US GAAP and financial reporting principles, with experience serving small and midsize businesses, privately held companies or multi-entity organizations.
  • Advanced Excel skills and extensive experience in financial modeling, budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, cash planning and profitability analysis.
  • Practical experience using QuickBooks Online reports and underlying data for analysis, and willingness to learn and adopt Kick.
  • Fluent spoken and written English, with the ability to explain complex financial information clearly, lead executive discussions and write practical recommendations.
  • Availability to work with U.S. clients during U.S. business hours and collaborate effectively in a worldwide remote team.

Preferred qualifications

  • CPA, CMA or an equivalent professional qualification.
  • Experience in a fractional CFO, financial consulting or professional accounting environment, including serving multiple clients.
  • Experience with private equity-backed businesses, investment platforms, growth initiatives, acquisitions, investments or financial restructuring.
  • Experience improving financial systems, reporting frameworks and performance management processes.

Measures of success

Performance will be assessed against agreed client scopes and service levels, with attention to factors within the Advisor’s control:

  • Timely, accurate management reporting and well-prepared monthly reviews and quarterly planning sessions, with dependencies raised early.
  • Useful forecasts with clear assumptions, explained variances and timely updates when circumstances change.
  • Consistent action follow-through, documented decisions and progress against agreed client priorities.
  • Client satisfaction, responsiveness and contribution to retention through dependable advisory service.
  • Delivery hours aligned with scope, with capacity issues and additional work identified before commitments are missed.
