Construction Cost Accountant
Schedule:
- Mondays to Fridays, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Chicago, IL, USA
- 40 hours per week
- Includes 1-hour unpaid break
Job Description
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Construction Cost Accountant to join our team in a remote capacity. The ideal candidate will be responsible for overseeing project costs, managing payment applications, invoicing, and ensuring accurate financial reporting across construction projects. This role requires a strong understanding of construction accounting principles, advanced data analysis skills, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor and manage project expenses to ensure alignment with approved budgets and forecasts
- Review and process applications for payment, ensuring accuracy and compliance with contract terms
- Prepare, submit, and track customer invoices; follow up on outstanding balances
- Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable activities, ensuring timely and accurate processing
- Prepare, analyze, and maintain project cost reports, WIP schedules, and financial summaries
- Perform data analysis on project costs, labor, and margins to support management decision-making
- Collaborate with project managers and internal teams to provide financial insight and cost control support
- Assist with budget development, forecasting, and variance analysis
- Maintain accurate, organized financial records and supporting documentation
- Ensure compliance with accounting standards, internal controls, and company policies
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- Strong cost accounting experience, preferably in construction or project-based environments
- CPA designation or CPA-track experience preferred
- Data analysis experience strongly preferred, particularly in construction or project-based environments
- Advanced Excel skills required, including pivot tables, lookups (XLOOKUP / VLOOKUP), data validation, financial modeling, and reporting
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in construction accounting or a related role
- Strong knowledge of construction accounting principles, job costing, and WIP reporting
- High level of reliability, accuracy, discretion, and attention to detail
- Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
- Experience with Acumatica ERP is a plus
