Xero Bookkeeper (UK Consulting)

Client Overview

Our client is a boutique UK-based consulting and advisory firm providing strategic support to service-based businesses across consistent industry verticals. Currently in a growth phase, they are establishing robust financial operations and scaling their client base through expanded marketing efforts.

Job Description

You will serve as the dedicated bookkeeping specialist across multiple consulting clients, taking complete ownership of financial records from initial system setup through ongoing daily operations. Working directly with the consulting firm owner, you will bring backlogged Xero accounts current, establish proper financial controls, maintain routine monthly reconciliations, and ensure accurate financial visibility for service-based clients.

Schedule

  • Flexible anytime, 35 hours or more per week

Responsibilities

  • Set up and configure Xero accounting systems for new clients with incomplete or outdated implementations
  • Clean up backlogged financial transactions and perform catch-up reconciliations to bring client accounts current
  • Execute monthly bookkeeping, bank reconciliations, credit card reconciliations, and account matching
  • Manage ongoing bookkeeping operations, invoice processing, and record-keeping across multiple clients
  • Maintain proactive communication with the firm owner regarding project statuses, workload, and client account health
  • Identify discrepancies, track down missing documentation, and establish proper internal financial controls

Must-Have Requirements

  • Xero Expertise: Proven, hands-on bookkeeping experience specifically using Xero accounting software.
  • Service-Based Accounting: Prior experience working with service-based businesses and managing multiple client accounts.
  • Catch-Up & Cleanup Ability: Demonstrated ability to take on messy, delayed, or incomplete books and bring them up to date efficiently.
  • Communication & Reliability: Excellent English communication skills to collaborate directly with a UK-based owner; high level of integrity handling confidential financial data.
  • Workload Management: Strong organizational skills to manage competing priorities across multiple clients simultaneously.

Nice-to-Have Requirements

  • Bonus if you have prior experience supporting consulting firms, advisory practices, or agency clients.
  • Familiarity with UK accounting standards, terminology, and VAT/financial structures.
  • Flexible availability to scale working hours as the firm’s client roster expands.
  • Basic administrative capabilities to support general back-office tasks during lighter operational cycles.

Why Join This Team

  • Partner with a growing UK advisory firm with clear potential to increase hours up to full-time status
  • Build a focused long-term partnership with a single consulting firm rather than juggling independent clients
  • Specialized focus on core bookkeeping rather than wearing unrelated generalist hats
  • Deepen domain expertise by managing businesses across consistent, structured industry verticals
  • Direct, collaborative relationship with the business owner in a close-knit environment

Independent Contractor Perks

  • Health insurance coverage for eligible location
  • Permanent work from home
  • Immediate hiring
