Google Ads Specialist - Australian Accounts (Performance Max)

Overview

Our client is looking for an experienced Google Ads Specialist - Australian Accounts (Performance Max) to join their performance marketing team and independently manage paid search campaigns across a diverse portfolio of client accounts. In this mid-to-senior level role, you will analyze account performance, troubleshoot conversion issues, and execute commercially-driven optimization decisions without needing constant direction. Working alongside Account Management and Strategy teams, your primary focus will span high-impact Google Search campaigns, lead generation, ecommerce growth, tracking setup, and client reporting.

Schedule:

  • Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM AEST, with 1 hour unpaid break (8 hours/day, 40 hours/week)

Responsibilities

Google Ads Campaign Management

  • Manage multiple client accounts, pacing monthly budgets and building multi-channel campaigns (Search, Performance Max, Shopping, Display, YouTube, Demand Gen) from scratch.
  • Review account structures regularly to optimize efficiency, scalability, and machine learning performance through consolidation or restructuring.

Keyword Strategy

  • Conduct intent-driven keyword research, implement match type strategies, and regularly review search term reports to identify expansion opportunities.
  • Add negative keywords to prevent wasted spend, resolve keyword cannibalization, and align keyword strategy with Smart Bidding.

Campaign Optimization

  • Perform deep-dive performance optimizations covering bid strategies, targeting, Quality Score, loss metrics (IS due to Budget/Rank), ad creative, and landing page efficiency.
  • Diagnose root causes of account underperformance to make impactful, data-backed adjustments rather than superficial edits.

Bidding Strategy

  • Strategic implementation and management of automated bidding (Max Conversions, tCPA, Max Conversion Value, tROAS) and Manual CPC.
  • Protect campaign stability by respecting machine learning periods and avoiding unnecessary changes that reset bidding algorithms.

Ad Creation and Testing

  • Write high-converting Responsive Search Ads (RSAs) tailored to keyword intent, landing pages, and consumer pain points.
  • Implement and test messaging strategies alongside relevant asset extensions (sitelinks, callouts, call assets, promotions, images).

Conversion Tracking and Measurement

  • Configure, verify, and troubleshoot tracking tools including Google Ads Conversion Tracking, GA4, GTM, Merchant Center, Enhanced Conversions, UTMs, and call/lead/ecommerce tracking.
  • Identify tracking errors causing optimization issues and resolve data discrepancies across platforms.

Google Analytics 4

  • Navigate GA4 to evaluate traffic acquisition, user behavior, conversions, and key engagement metrics to support Google Ads decisions.
  • Investigate and explain cross-platform data discrepancies internally.

Performance Max

  • Strategically build and manage PMax campaigns (asset groups, audience signals, search themes, listing groups, brand exclusions, new customer acquisition).
  • Evaluate when Performance Max is strategically appropriate versus Standard Shopping rather than relying solely on automated recommendations.

Ecommerce

  • Manage Google Merchant Center, product feeds, feed diagnostics, and disapproved items for Shopify and other ecommerce stores.
  • Optimize product segmentation, brand vs. non-brand campaigns, ROAS, and best-seller prioritization.

Lead Generation

  • Drive commercially valuable lead volume by optimizing toward CPL, qualified lead rates, cost per qualified lead, and CAC.
  • Leverage CRM data and lead quality feedback to make strategic campaign decisions beyond simple form submission volume.

Account Auditing

  • Perform end-to-end account audits assessing campaign architecture, match types, landing pages, tracking accuracy, recommendations history, and attribution models.
  • Deliver actionable immediate optimization steps alongside long-term strategic roadmaps.

Reporting and Analysis

  • Deliver insightful performance commentary that explains the why behind account metrics, strategic actions taken, and recommendations for next steps.
  • Proactively monitor and flag performance drops, tracking errors, budget caps, landing page issues, and policy disapprovals.

Client and Internal Communication

  • Translate complex paid search data into clear commercial insights for internal teams and optional client meetings.
  • Communicate proactively across Slack, email, and project software, escalating significant account issues immediately.

Agency Environment

  • Efficiently prioritize and balance multiple client accounts across diverse industries within a fast-paced agency setting.
  • Document account changes, meet strict deadlines, manage budgets carefully, and seamlessly handle both established accounts and new builds.

Requirements

  • Approximately 3 or more years of hands on Google Ads experience.
  • Prior experience managing Google Ads campaigns for Australian clients or businesses
  • Strong experience with Google Search Ads is mandatory.
  • Strong experience with Google Ads conversion tracking is mandatory.
  • Experience with Performance Max is required.
  • Experience with Google Analytics 4 is required.
  • Experience with Google Tag Manager is highly desirable.
  • Experience with Google Merchant Center is highly desirable.
  • Experience managing both lead generation and ecommerce campaigns is preferred.
  • Previous agency experience is strongly preferred.
  • The candidate should have personally managed meaningful advertising budgets and should be able to discuss the decisions they made within those accounts.
  • Google Ads certifications are beneficial but practical experience is significantly more important.

Preferred Candidate

  • Someone who can ultimately take ownership of Google Ads execution across a portfolio of agency clients.
  • Operate as a genuine performance specialist rather than simply a campaign operator.
  • Someone who actively identifies problems, opportunities and areas for growth and communicates these clearly with the wider agency team.

Technical Knowledge

Candidates should have strong working knowledge of Google Ads, Google Analytics 4, Google Tag Manager, Google Merchant Center, Google Looker Studio, Google Search Console, Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets, Shopify tracking, WordPress tracking, UTM parameters, conversion attribution, enhanced conversions, Consent Mode and basic website conversion rate optimisation.
