Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Financial Controller with strong U.S. nonprofit accounting expertise to take ownership of key financial and accounting functions and serve as a trusted financial partner to senior leadership.
This is a hands-on Controller-level role combining day-to-day financial oversight with budgeting, forecasting, cash management, financial reporting, and strategic analysis. The ideal candidate understands the unique requirements of nonprofit finance, including U.S. GAAP, restricted funds, conditional donations, and Form 990 reporting.
You will work closely with senior leadership to bring clarity to financial performance, identify risks and opportunities, improve financial processes, and translate complex financial information into practical business recommendations.
This role is ideal for someone who is analytical, proactive, highly accountable, and comfortable operating independently while also collaborating closely with a small finance team.

Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Accounting
- Oversee day-to-day accounting and financial operations.
- Take ownership of the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of financial records.
- Apply U.S. GAAP within a nonprofit accounting environment.
- Manage accounting for restricted funds, conditional donations, and other nonprofit-specific transactions.
- Review financial activity, identify issues or inconsistencies, and drive timely resolution.
- Support and oversee the preparation of Form 990 and other nonprofit financial reporting requirements.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to junior accounting team members.
- Serve as a reliable financial resource for senior leadership.
Budgeting, Forecasting & Cash Management
- Lead the annual budgeting process and ongoing financial forecasting.
- Develop and maintain detailed cash flow forecasts.
- Prepare and manage 13-week cash flow forecasts.
- Monitor cash balances, liquidity, commitments, and upcoming financial obligations.
- Analyze actual performance against budget and forecast.
- Identify financial risks, trends, and opportunities and proactively communicate them to leadership.
- Provide financial analysis to support both operational and strategic decision-making.
Financial Reporting & Analysis
- Prepare, review, and present accurate financial statements and management reports.
- Develop meaningful P&L reporting and financial analysis for senior leadership.
- Analyze program-level or product-level margins and profitability.
- Investigate budget-to-actual and forecast variances and provide clear explanations.
- Turn financial data into actionable insights and recommendations.
- Help leadership understand the financial impact of operational and strategic decisions.
- Present financial information clearly to both finance and non-finance stakeholders.
Systems, Technology & Process Improvement
- Work extensively within QuickBooks Online and Bill.com.
- Use advanced Excel and Google Sheets for financial modeling, analysis, forecasting, and reporting.
- Leverage AI tools to improve financial workflows, analysis, documentation, and productivity.
- Demonstrate practical knowledge of Claude or another leading AI platform.
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting, controls, and overall financial efficiency.
- Contribute to the development and strengthening of internal financial controls and processes.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Participate in and lead finance and operating meetings with senior leadership.
- Clearly communicate financial performance, risks, and recommendations.
- Take ownership of financial issues and drive them through to resolution.
- Work effectively within a lean, collaborative team environment.
- Mentor and support junior accounting staff.
- Demonstrate strong emotional intelligence when working with senior leaders and cross-functional stakeholders.
- Operate with a high degree of independence, accountability, and professionalism.
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications
- Controller-level or equivalent senior finance/accounting experience.
- Proven experience working with a U.S.-based nonprofit organization.
- Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP for nonprofit organizations.
- Hands-on experience with Form 990 preparation and nonprofit financial reporting.
- Strong knowledge of restricted funds, conditional donations, and nonprofit-specific accounting.
- Advanced hands-on experience with QuickBooks Online.
- Advanced hands-on experience with Bill.com.
- Strong budgeting and financial forecasting experience.
- Demonstrated experience with cash management and 13-week cash flow forecasting.
- Strong financial statement preparation and P&L reporting experience.
- Experience analyzing program-level or product-level margins and profitability.
- Advanced Excel and Google Sheets skills.
- Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
- Comfortable participating in and leading finance and operating meetings.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
- High emotional intelligence and the ability to build trust with senior leadership.
- Ability to mentor and support junior accounting professionals.
- Proactive, accountable, and solutions-oriented approach.
- Comfortable working independently in a remote environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience using Claude or another leading AI platform in a professional environment.
- Experience improving accounting systems, workflows, processes, and internal controls.
- Experience working within a small or lean finance team.
- Strong ability to translate financial analysis into clear operational and strategic recommendations.
