Job Overview:
Our client is looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Australian Public Practice Tax Accountant - BAS & Income Tax to join their growing team. This role is ideal for someone with at least 2 years of experience in an Australian public practice accounting firm, who has hands-on experience preparing income tax returns and Business Activity Statements (BAS).
The successful candidate will support the preparation of taxation and compliance work for a diverse portfolio of individual and business clients while working closely with senior accountants to ensure accurate and timely delivery of services.
Schedule:
Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM AEST, with 1 hour unpaid break (40 work hours per week)
Responsibilities:
Tax Compliance
- Prepare individual, company, trust, partnership, and self-managed super fund (SMSF) income tax returns (where applicable)
- Prepare and lodge Business Activity Statements (BAS) and Instalment Activity Statements (IAS)
- Assist in preparing Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) returns and other compliance work as required
- Ensure taxation work complies with Australian Taxation Office (ATO) requirements and deadlines
Accounting & Financial Support
- Prepare working papers and supporting documentation for tax engagements
- Assist with preparing financial statements for various entity types
- Review client financial records and identify missing or incomplete information
- Liaise with senior accountants regarding client queries and technical matters
Client Communication
- Communicate professionally with clients to obtain required documentation
- Respond to routine client enquiries regarding taxation and compliance matters
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all client interactions
Administrative & Compliance Support
- Maintain accurate client files and accounting records
- Assist with ATO correspondence and document management
- Ensure workpapers and documentation are completed in accordance with firm standards
- Support continuous improvement of internal processes and procedures
Requirements:
- Minimum 2 years of experience working in an Australian public practice accounting firm
- Proven experience preparing Australian income tax returns and Business Activity Statements (BAS)
- Good understanding of Australian taxation principles and ATO requirements
- Strong attention to detail and analytical skills
- Excellent written and verbal English communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office
Nice-to-have Qualifications:
- Experience using Xero, MYOB, QuickBooks, or APS/XPM
- Exposure to preparing financial statements
- Experience with GST, PAYG, and payroll tax compliance
- Relevant accounting qualification or currently studying towards CPA or CA
