PCB Designer

Client Overview

We are seeking an experienced, self-driven PCB Designer to transform a fully functional, manually wired hardware prototype into a professional, manufacturer-ready Printed Circuit Board (PCB).

The product is an innovative, modular, USB-programmable control box tailored specifically for the prop-making and cosplay markets. It acts as an all-in-one hub that integrates various inputs and outputs—including LEDs, smoke machines, sound modules, physical buttons, motion detectors, and custom lighting—into a single, seamless, powered unit.

Job Overview

We are seeking a skilled PCB Designer to convert an existing prototype into a manufacturable PCB design. You will work closely with the founder to create schematics, design a custom motherboard, prepare manufacturing documentation, and ensure the final product meets technical and production requirements. This role is ideal for someone with strong electronics design experience who enjoys bringing innovative hardware products from prototype to production.

Schedule: CST Texas, Part-time 20 hours/week flexible anytime

Responsibilities

  • Convert an existing prototype into professional PCB schematics and board layouts.
  • Design a custom PCB that supports modular components, including LEDs, smoke machines, lighting systems, sound buttons, and motion detectors.
  • Create and maintain complete Bills of Materials (BOM) for manufacturing.
  • Ensure the PCB supports USB programming and modular expansion.
  • Test, troubleshoot, and refine PCB designs based on prototype feedback.
  • Prepare Gerber files, manufacturing documentation, and all production-ready deliverables.
  • Collaborate with the client to understand product functionality, design requirements, and manufacturing constraints.
  • Deliver a final PCB design ready for manufacturing, branding, and patent integration.

Requirements

  • Proven experience designing custom PCBs from concept through manufacturing.
  • Proficiency with PCB design software such as KiCad, EasyEDA, Altium Designer, or similar.
  • Strong understanding of schematic capture, PCB layout, power management, USB integration, and modular electronic systems.
  • Experience creating Bills of Materials (BOMs) and manufacturing documentation.
  • Familiarity with PCB manufacturing processes and production requirements.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate remotely.
  • Ability to work independently and meet project milestones.
  • Portfolio showcasing previous PCB designs or hardware projects brought to production.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing consumer electronics, wearable technology, or modular embedded systems.
  • Familiarity with the unique constraints of the maker, prop-making, or cosplay hardware communities.
  • Prior experience working with early-stage startups or independent founders where agile, iterative prototyping is key.

Independent Contractor Perks:

  • Permanent work from home
  • Immediate hiring
