Their work is grounded in clarity, control, and confidence—for both their clients and their team. They are seeking a Senior Tax & Compliance Accountant to join their Melbourne-led team. This is a senior, hands-on role with leadership responsibility, focused on Australian tax compliance, quality control, and team development. In this position, you will oversee complex compliance work, mentor junior accountants, and collaborate closely with client managers and bookkeeping teams to deliver accurate, timely, and confident outcomes for Australian clients.
Schedule
Monday - Friday, 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM AEST (Melbourne, AU Time), with 1 hour unpaid break (40 hours per week)
Responsibilities
- Australian Tax & Compliance: Prepare financial statements and income tax returns for companies, trusts, partnerships, sole traders, and complex individuals.
- Complex Tax Management: Handle technical tax matters including CGT, ESS, managed funds, rental properties, Division 7A, and cryptocurrency transactions.
- Ledger Reconciliation: Reconcile balance sheet and profit & loss accounts; isolate and correct discrepancies across ATO ledger items including GST, PAYGW, and income tax.
- Asset & Liability Auditing: Maintain fixed asset registers covering acquisitions and disposals; prepare comprehensive FBT calculations and FBT returns.
- Lodgment & Reporting: Prepare and lodge BAS/IAS, calculate fuel tax credits, manage year-end tax planning files, and reconcile multi-jurisdictional state payroll tax obligations.
- Leadership & Supervision: Review and oversee work files prepared by junior accountants to ensure accuracy, compliance, and strict deadline adherence.
- Team Mentorship: Train, mentor, and upskill accountants in direct collaboration with the Compliance Team Manager and Client Managers.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with bookkeeping, client services, and client managers to resolve intricate stakeholder queries and optimize internal compliance systems.
Requirements
- Industry Experience: Minimum 5 years of direct experience in Australian tax and compliance within a registered Australian tax accounting firm.
- Formal Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accountancy, Commerce, or Business with a dedicated Accounting major.
- Taxation Knowledge: Strong structural knowledge of Australian tax law, specific corporate regulations, FBT guidelines, Division 7A, and complex trust structures.
- Software Mastery: Must be a Xero Certified accountant with advanced confidence using Xero, Xero Tax, and XPM platforms.
- Linguistic Standard: High level of written and spoken English communication skills suitable for managing senior Australian stakeholder relationships.
- Analytical Skills: Exceptional attention to detail, strong ledger reconciliation abilities, and a structured approach to problem-solving.
Highly Regarded (Bonus)
- Previous experience working within a BPO or outsourced accounting firm environment.
- Hands-on exposure to Self-Managed Super Funds (SMSF) accounting.
- Practical familiarity operating Karbon workflow software, Koinly, or similar accounting applications.
