Senior Accountant | AU Tax

Job Overview

Our client is looking for a highly experienced Senior Accountant with a strong Australian tax and compliance background to lead the finance function of a fast-growing multi-entity transport and logistics group. This role will oversee the finance team, ensure financial integrity, prepare board-level management reports, manage BAS preparation, and drive process improvement and automation.

Schedule

  • Monday - Friday, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM AEST, with 1 hour unpaid break (40 work hours per week)

Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & Month-End

  • Lead full month-end close within 5 working days
  • Prepare consolidated and entity-level financial statements
  • Produce board-ready management reports, including variance analysis, revenue breakdown, fleet costs, and financial insights
  • Review reconciliations performed by the Finance Team Leader
  • Identify financial trends, risks, and performance drivers

Australian Tax & Compliance

  • Prepare BAS working papers (GST, PAYG, installments)
  • Review GST coding and compliance
  • Prepare Fuel Tax Credit calculations where applicable
  • Support Australian tax lodgements
  • Maintain audit-ready documentation

Cashflow, Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Prepare weekly cash flow forecasts
  • Maintain rolling 13-week cashflow projections
  • Assist in budgeting and financial planning
  • Develop financial models and projections using Microsoft Excel
  • Forecast GST liabilities, payroll obligations, and major cost cycles

Internal Controls & Fraud Prevention

  • Implement and maintain segregation of duties
  • Strengthen approval and payment controls
  • Monitor unusual transactions and financial anomalies
  • Maintain audit trail integrity
  • Ensure finance processes are compliant and controlled

Automation & Systems Improvement

  • Utilise Xero automation tools
  • Identify inefficiencies and implement workflow improvements
  • Support integration between operational and accounting systems
  • Improve reporting processes and efficiency

Requirements

  • CPA qualified or equivalent
  • Minimum 5 years of experience supporting Australian clients
  • Strong knowledge of GST, BAS, PAYG, and compliance
  • Advanced Xero proficiency
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills (financial modelling, forecasting, reporting)
  • Experience preparing board-level management reports
  • Experience implementing internal controls and improving finance workflows
  • Strong fraud prevention awareness
  • Experience reconciling high-volume credit accounts (review level)
  • Experience with Australian tax and accounting standards
  • Strong proficiency in Xero as the primary accounting platform
  • Ability to navigate multiple systems and software tools
  • Daily reconciliation discipline and a no-backlog environment
  • Strong focus on deadlines, accuracy, and accountability
  • Experience with automation tools is highly regarded
  • Ability to contribute to workflow improvement initiatives
  • Strong commitment to optimizing cash flow and financial processes

  • This is a permanent work-from-home role under an Independent Contractor arrangement.
