Job Description:

This role is for a senior backend engineer, not a web designer or customer support specialist. The focus is on custom plugin development, API integrations, backend automation, and maintaining a secure, scalable codebase.

You will play a key role in ongoing platform development and collaborate closely with leadership on technical planning and architectural decisions.

Key Responsibilities:

Backend Development & Platform Engineering

  • Develop, maintain, and extend custom WordPress plugins using PHP

  • Maintain and enhance a proprietary Club Management Platform built as a multi-feature WordPress plugin ecosystem

  • Refactor and optimise existing complex codebases for performance, security, and maintainability

  • Build backend functionality including cron jobs, automation logic, internal tools, and workflows

Integrations & Systems

  • Build and maintain API integrations with external systems, including CRM platforms

  • Handle authentication, data mapping, and secure data synchronisation

  • Work with MySQL databases, custom queries, and schema planning

Technical Collaboration & Architecture

  • Collaborate directly with the CEO on technical scoping, feature planning, and architectural decisions

  • Work alongside an existing hosting/webmaster technician responsible for front-end builds and migrations

  • Troubleshoot and resolve advanced technical issues across multiple environments

  • Build custom admin dashboards and internal tools using PHP and JavaScript

Requirements (Skills):

Essential (Non-Negotiable):

  • 5+ years of professional PHP development experience

  • Strong expertise in WordPress plugin architecture, hooks, filters, and custom development

  • Proven experience building complex custom plugins (not just theme edits)

  • Experience with REST APIs, OAuth2, and third-party integrations

  • Strong knowledge of MySQL, database queries, and schema design

  • Experience with cron jobs, automation, and background processing

  • Familiarity with HTML, CSS, JavaScript (jQuery preferred)

  • Experience using Git or similar version control systems

  • Strong debugging skills (Xdebug or equivalent)

Nice to Have (Optional):

  • Experience with CRM platforms and integrations

  • Experience with multi-site WordPress environments

  • Experience building dashboards, platforms, or SaaS-style tools

  • Familiarity with modern JS frameworks (React, Vue)

  • Basic DevOps or deployment workflow knowledge

  • HMO coverage for eligible locations
  • Permanent work from home
  • Immediate hiring
  • Steady freelance job
